The majority of all humans now live in cities. Cities are superdiverse, multireligious, multicultural. It is not easy to find a common identity, to find the right ways to integration and equity. The only way is to consult, discuss, participate and work together. That is called “democracy” and “citizenship”.
Democracy is not only elections. It is a regime with respect and dignity, with human rights at the center. Democracy respects difference, gives rights to minorities and individuals, supports emancipation and freedom. Democracy is not a system, but a way of life based on tolerance and open minds. Freedom, Equality and Solidarity: That is what it is about, and the air of the city makes free!
Democratic cities are caring cities. Democratic cities search for empowerment through multilateral governance. Democratic cities are creative and put culture and the arts at the center of urban development. Cities in action deal with planetary challenges in a changing society looking for another imaginary and governance. That is the main challenge for mayors of the world.
