8 January 2021 – The GPM stands united with US Conference of Mayors.
We have watched the scene unfold at the US Capitol in horror. This lawlessness and violence have no place in a democracy. As disturbing as the images coming out of Washington are, they are sadly unsurprising given the US president’s incendiary comments and unwillingness to accept the results of the election. As GPM Mayor of Columbia Stephen Benjamin, GPM Executive Committee Vice-Chair, observes, “Words matter. Leadership matters.”
The GPM condemns this violence and supports the peaceful transition of power.
We stand with our partner, the United States Conference of Mayors (USCM), and support the statement of USCM President Greg Fischer, Mayor of Louisville: “What America and the world are witnessing in our nation’s capital is a shameful attack on our democracy. The appalling desecration of the Capitol – the very symbol of American democracy – demands urgent leadership that brings an end to this scene and upholds the principles of our constitution.”
We support the American people and stand with all US mayors, especially Mayor Muriel Bowser of Washington DC, in their efforts to protect the rights and safety of their citizens, cities, and institutions.
