Mayors around the world are invited to participate in the high-level meeting: “Uniting Mayors: Local Solutions to Global Climate Challenges” on Tuesday, 20 April 2021 at 16:00-18:00 hrs CEST. In partnership with the British Council and the Global Parliament of Mayors, this meeting will engage city leaders from around the world on issues of climate change, with a focus on climate migration, and make the mayors’ voices heard in the lead up to the United Nations Climate Change Conference 2021 (COP26). This is in line with the UK’s ambition to make COP26 the most inclusive COP ever.
The project will put a special focus on the rise of sea levels, climate displacement and the most vulnerable groups affected by climate change through an inclusive mayors’ dialogue. After an inspiring Kick-off meeting organised last February, a series of focus group discussions have been attended by mayors from around the world. This upcoming plenary discussion will be the final input from mayors to establish a mayoral Call to Action in the run up to COP26 and to guarantee its advancement worldwide.
The event will be opened by GPM Chair Mayor Peter Kurz (Mannheim, Germany) and keynote speaker Director General of the International Organization of Migration, Antonio Vitorio. The opening will be followed by a plenary debate among mayors and three thematic discussions that will run parallel on the issues of culture, finance and governance related to climate-related displacement.
During this discussion mayors will receive the opportunity to share their valid concerns and innovative ideas on one of these themes and, by doing so, to contribute to the Call to Action.
Please join us on 20 April and help us to build up a coalition of leading mayors on this urgent issue.
