30 November, 2021 – The Global Parliament of Mayors is extremely proud to be partnering with the governments of the United States, Germany, The Netherlands, and the German Marshall Fund, as well as the Woodrow Wilson Center to organize the side event “Mayors Delivering Democracy Daily” of the Summit for Democracy. The event, held on December 6th from 2 to 4pm CET, will be a conversation about democratic innovation with mayors from and around the world. Discussion topics will range from strengthening democracy against authoritarianism, to combating corruption as well as diversity, inclusion and human rights. Speakers include GPM Chair Mayor Kurz of Mannheim as well as GPM Mayor Aboutaleb of Rotterdam, alongside mayors from around the world. The sessions will be moderated by Jonathan Capehart, Editorial Board & Opinion Writer for the Washington Post, and MSNBC anchor and host of “The Sunday Show with Jonathan Capehart”.
“Mayors Delivering Democracy Daily” is a city-focused side-event of the Summit for Democracy, organized by the Biden administration. The Summit for Democracy will bring together leaders from government, civil society, and the private sector to set forth an affirmative agenda for democratic renewal and to tackle the greatest threats faced by democracies today through collective action. Leaders will be encouraged to announce specific actions and commitments to meaningful internal reforms and international initiatives that advance the Summit’s goals. The GPM is honoured to be partnering with national governments and civil society and to offer local leaders a platform alongside national leaders. Actions at all levels of government are essential to tackle the most pressing issues facing democracy today, including corruption, authoritarianism, and social exclusion, as well as climate change, COVID-19, and poverty.
