12 May, 2021 – Ivo Daalder will take on the role of Chair of the Advisory Committee of the Global Parliament of Mayors (GPM). He succeeds Professor Sheila Foster (Georgetown University, Washington DC, USA) and Dr. Robert Muggah (Igarapé Institute, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), who led the committee from 2017-2020.

Ambassador Daalder is president of the Chicago Council on Global Affairs. From 2009-2013 he served as the United States ambassador to NATO. Previously, he was a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and the director for European Affairs on President Bill Clinton’s National Security Council staff. He is the author and editor of ten books and a frequent commentator in the media on international affairs.

Daalder has been an active member of the GPM Advisory Committee since 2017. As Chair, he will lead the expert team as they provide guidance to the GPM Executive Committee on the development of the organization and the substance of GPM programming.

Dr. Peter Kurz, GPM Executive Committee Chair and Mayor of Mannheim, Germany, states, “We are delighted that Ivo will take the helm of the Advisory Committee. Ivo is a strategic thinker and a thoughtful leader who understands the important role cities can play in addressing global challenges.
I am looking forward to working even more closely with him in coming years.”

“Through the Council’s work to elevate global cities as central actors shaping world affairs, I’ve witnessed the powerful role mayors play in not only making decisions to benefit their communities but also to advance solutions for global challenges,” Daalder said. “I look forward to working closely with these leaders at the Global Parliament of Mayors.”
