10 December, 2021 – GPM Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr (Freetown, Sierra Leone) was speaker at the Summit for Democracy, hosted by President Joe Biden. This two-day summit brought together leaders from government, civil society, and the private sector to set forth an affirmative agenda for democratic renewal and to tackle the greatest threats faced by democracies today through collective action.
Mayor Aki-Sawyerr discussed the role of democracy and mayors during Covid-19, how participation has been a key for the progress of Freetown.

As part of the Summit, the Wilson Center, the governments of the United States, Germany, and The Netherlands, the Global Parliament of Mayors, and the German Marshall Fund hosted a conversation about democratic innovation with mayors from the U.S. and around the world, ‘Mayors Delivering Democracy Daily’ on 6 December 2021.
