30 March 2023 – The GPM is delighted to welcome Mayor Marek Nazarko of Michałowo, Poland, as the newest member. He was elected on October 27, 2002, in the first general election of mayors in Poland’s postwar history. During his mayorship, the municipality of Michałowo has received the national Green Phoenix Award and won the Mayor Paweł Adamowicz Award 2022.
The Mayor Paweł Adamowicz Award was awarded to the citizens of Michalowo for providing clothing, warm meals, and accommodation to refugees who found themselves stranded between Poland and Belarus in 2022. Temporary housing in the municipality has also served families from Ukraine since the Russian invasion in March 2022.
Michalowo is in north-eastern Poland, close to the border with Belarus.
