The G7 Urban7 (U7) has been officially acknowledged as a formal G7 Engagement Group under the French G7 Presidency in 2026. This milestone strengthens the integration of local and regional government perspectives into global discussions on economic transformation, sustainability, and resilience.

With cities and territories playing a pivotal role in translating international commitments into action particularly in areas such as climate policy, social inclusion, democratic governance, and resilience; the U7 now serves as the structured channel through which these local perspectives contribute to the G7 agenda.

An International U7 Mayors’ Summit will be held in Nancy, France, from 2–4 June 2026, ahead of the G7 Leaders’ Summit later that month. The announcement was made on 29 January during a press conference organized by France Urbaine and the City of Nancy, together with ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability.

The Summit will gather mayors and local leaders from G7 member states and beyond, alongside national and international city associations, networks, and institutional partners. Participants will work collectively to formulate political messages and policy recommendations aligned with the priorities of the French G7 Presidency.

Under France’s 2026 G7 Presidency, France Urbaine, the U7 Secretariat, the City of Nancy, and the Greater Nancy Metropolitan Authority. Working in partnership with the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs will host the Summit. The U7 Secretariat is composed of the Global Parliament of Mayors and ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability.

The Summit will offer a high-level forum for dialogue across different levels of government, focusing on key themes identified by the French Presidency, including ecological transition, social cohesion, territorial resilience, and the role of local and regional authorities in global governance. It aims to strengthen multilevel cooperation and ensure that global strategies are responsive to local contexts and realities.

Additional details regarding the Summit programme and participation will be released in the coming months.
